About our Working Group

Chair for Data Analysis and Visualization by Prof. Dr. Daniel A. Keim

At the forefront of Human-AI teaming and interactive data analysis since 2000, the Data Analysis and Visualization research lab led by Prof. Dr. Daniel A. Keim, is a leader in visual analytics. Based at the University of Konstanz, one of Germany’s eleven universities of excellence, we combine academic research with real-world impact.

Our lab's expertise spans key global industries, supporting industry efforts to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning in domains like public safety and civil security, digital humanities and linguistics, sports and behavioral analytics, geo- and infrastructure analysis. Researching XAI, ML, HF-RL, LLMs, HD-MDS, MMR, GIS, we are dedicated to solving complex challenges through innovative data science. Our research bridges data visualization, interactive human-AI collaboration, and intelligent data exploration through interactive, user-centered approaches, addressing the most pressing challenges and empower meaningful insights from vast datasets to foster deeper understanding by combining the strengths of both humans and machines.

The research group initially focused on methods for interactive mass data analysis, applied to very large multidimensional and geographic datasets. This included clustering in high-dimensional spaces and applications in multimedia similarity search (2D and 3D). Applications that emerged from this work in areas such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM), telecommunications, financial market analysis, and network security for the visual analysis of business, customer, financial, demographic, and network data have since expanded into a variety of new fields.

With over 50 research initiatives across Europe and the U.S., and supported by grants from the EU, BMBF, BMWK, DFG, DHS, BMWSB, and DAAD, our lab collaborates with diverse sectors to enhance economic outcomes through data-driven analysis. Through our affiliated Steinbeis technology transfer center, we partner directly with industry to bring advanced analytics solutions to life, transforming data assets into actionable insights.

At the DBVIS group, we are dedicated to advancing Human-AI teaming and visual analytics and contributing cutting-edge technologies that benefit society. Join us in shaping the future of AI research - as a partner, collaborator, colleague, student, or curious member of the public. Follow our journey as an inclusive and responsible team, enabling organizations, policymakers, and the research community to harness the power of big data for intelligent, impactful decision-making.

Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid: humans are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant; together they are powerful beyond imagination.
